John Gotti was an American gangster and head of America's most powerful crime syndicate, the Gambino crime family in New York City.
He orchestrated the murder of the former boss of the Gambino family, Paul Castellano, in December 1985 before usurping the role of the business. Gotti had grown up in poverty in the Bronx, living a life of crime with his five brothers who all became "made men" at a young age, which is a fully initiated member of the Mafia.
John Gotti became known as "The Teflon Don", "The Dapper Don", "Johnny Boy" and "Crazy Horse" for his expensive clothes and flamboyant personality that attracted the media.
He soon went to prison in 1992 for five murders after his own underboss, Salvatore Gravano, known as "Sammy the Bull", assisted the FBI in his conviction. Sammy had heard Gotti speaking negatively of him on a wire tap that implicated both of them in a number of murders.
During his life sentence, John Gotti Senior died of throat cancer at the age of 62 on 10 June 2002. His son, John Gotti Junior lives on in his name and took a hold of the family mob business in 1993 to 1999.

John Gotti Senior was married to Victoria DiGiorgio from 1962 up until his death in 2002.
Victoria, now 79, is an entrepreneur and owner of several businesses. During her marriage to Gotti Senior, however, Victoria remained a housewife whilst being aware of the family business.
The two had met in a bar in 1958 and went on to date for four years before they got hitched. They had five children together: Angel, Victoria, John Jr, Frank and Peter Jr. Frank sadly passed away at the age of 12 in 1980 so four children remain.
Victoria has an Italian background from her father, a Russian and Italian heritage from her mother and was raised in New York City.
She is estimated to be worth around $2 million.

John Gotti Senior became one of the family's biggest earners in history with a $30 million net worth and even comes in at number nine on the top 20 richest criminals in the world.
John Gotti Junior number 12 on the top 20 richest criminals list with his net worth of $10 million. Gotti Junior's mother, Victoria, was always displeased that his father had got him into the crime family business when he stepped in his role after Gotti Senior went to prison.
Gotti Junior is said to have left the crime life in 2010 and now tells his own story with shows like the 2018 documentary, Gotti: Godfather and son.

John Gotti and wife Victoria had five children together Angela, Victoria, John Junior, Frank and Peter.
Victoria Gotti, daughter of John Gotti, became a reality TV star after working as a reporter and columnist in New York.
Along with her three sons she starred in a reality TV show based on their lives called Growing Up Gotti. She went on to appear on Celebrity Apprentice.
She has written a number of books including her memoirs; This Family of Mine: What It Was Like Growing Up Gotti, and is estimated to be worth $2million on the back of her writing and TV career.
Who runs the Gambino family now?
Peter Gotti, the brother of John Gotti Senior, was last running the Gambino family.
The crime family is still said to be active despite Peter going onto serve a 25-year sentence in prison from 2004 until his death just last year on 25 February 2021.
At the time, Sammy Gravano, who sent his previous boss Gotti Senior to prison, had said "it is the end of an era" for the family.
Peter died of natural causes, aged 81, at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, North Carolina.
He had previously fought for an early release on the grounds that he had denounced the crime life and due to his ill-health.
