How 'The Expanse' Leaves the Door open for Season 7 and What The Cast Think (2024)

The Expanse came to an end on Friday, January 14, with the final episode of its sixth season airing on Amazon Prime Video.

Although the streaming platform has confirmed it will not continue to make the sci-fi show, this isn't the first time The Expanse has been canceled and subsequently saved. Prime Video originally picked up the show because Syfy dropped it in 2018 after making three seasons.

The series is based on James S. A. Corey's book series and Season 6 adapts Babylon's Ashes, but there are four more Expanse novels that follow it.

Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who write the novels under the Corey pseudonym, told Polygon in 2020 that Season 6 was simply a "natural pause point" for the show. Franck said: "Alcon [Television Group]—our studio—is very committed to the IP. They have lots of plans. We'll see what happens after that."

The cast of the show spoke to Newsweek about whether they would like to continue. Here's how the finale of Season 6 leaves the door open for future seasons, in any form, and what the cast think.

How 'The Expanse' Finale Leaves the Door Open for Season 7

Season 6 introduces the planet of Laconia and each episode gives a brief look at the time spent there by young girl Cara—and her discovery that one species of alien can bring the dead back to life.

The Laconia system becomes a focus in Persepolis Rising, the seventh book in Corey's series, which suggests it was brought up with the hope that the show could pick up where it was left off.

In the Season 6 finale, Cara brings her brother back from the dead with the help of the alien creatures. When her parents are appalled by what happened to their son, she takes him and runs away into the woods.

Their story is left on this cliffhanger, and the open-ended nature of the plotline makes it seem like something that could be returned to in future.

The finale also sees Camina Drummer (Cara Gee) made the president of the Transport Union, and her time in the role is examined further in the novels that follow Babylon's Ashes.

One other reveal in the episode is how Naomi Nagata's (Dominique Tipper) son Filip (Jasai Case-Owens) did not disintegrate alongside his father Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander), because he left the ship before Naomi triggered the Ring Entities to consume them.

Filip chooses to make his own way in the universe without his father's negative influence, and is seen piloting a small craft into space to an unknown destination. His story could also be a focus in a potential future season.

The episode ends with Holden and Naomi discussing their future after defeating Marco, and Holden details how the Rocinante crew could work as security for ships heading into the Rings.

He also mentions how they could look into the protomolecule before Naomi tells him to stop and just enjoy the peace together, and the season comes to a close with the couple sharing the romantic moment.

It makes for a sweet ending and is certainly a satisfying way to bring the story to a close, but given the many unanswered questions it doesn't seem unreasonable for the show to return in some form or another in the future.

What 'The Expanse' Cast Have Said About Possibly Returning for a Seventh Season

Strait, Tipper, and Gee spoke with Newsweek about the possibility of returning to their roles of Holden, Naomi and Drummer in the future.

Gee was all for it, saying she'd "absolutely" want to reprise her role as Drummer: "This has been the dream role of my life. It's been incredible and the production team, everybody who has been involved, [have] become quite close."

She then joked: "I would pitch a musical spin-off starring the ghosts of Marco and Ashford, that would be fun, jazzy." Her co-star Alexander replied: "I would love that. Yes, bring Ashford back."

Strait agreed that he would be interested but added: "I'm very happy with [the ending], yeah. But grateful, I'm grateful that we were able to complete the story that way we have, on our own terms, over six years.

"It's so exceedingly rare to be able to do that, and if we do have the opportunity to do those other books, which is, you know, it's quite a big age gap, it's kind of its own story.

"You know, the part that makes this bittersweet is the prospect of not working with these people every year. What we've had was truly unique and really special, and, you know, to get the band back together would be amazing.

"But if it doesn't happen, it's still [OK], I mean, I've never been so proud professionally of anything by far. It's been wonderful."

Tipper felt more certain that the show would not return for a seventh season, and said: "Yeah, I just don't know. I think this is probably it. But, you know, like, if this is it, it's an excellent ending."

Reiterating how it wouldn't be fair on fans to bring back the show a second time from cancelation, she added: "To do that to you again, we've already ended it once!"
